KC effective in mud game

NEW BETHLEHEM — The Karns City football team stormed over the Redbank Valley Bulldogs Friday night.

The Gremlins (1-1) ran for 222 yards against the Bulldogs defense to help get the 28-14 win.

Gremlin head coach Ed Conto said it was nice to bounce back.

“(When) you start your season off on a negative,” Conto said, “it's good to get one in the win column.”

Conto said the muddy field played a part in the game plan. The rain stayed away for the most part during the game, but the field was very wet from earlier rain.

“(Quarterback) Brady (Ellenberger) is not a mudder ... this type of field isn't that good for him,” Conto said. “When we saw Brady struggling, we got Tyler (Kepple) in there.”

Despite the weather conditions, sophomore quarterback Tyler Kepple and senior quarterback Brady Ellenberger combined for 68 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Gremlins.

The Bulldogs (1-1) scored first when Kyle Lee ran back a 47-yard fumble return early in the first quarter. He ended the game with 65 rushing yards.

Senior Brandyn Bowser tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown reception from Kepple with 1:42 in the first quarter.

After Kepple's 77-yard run to the 1-yard line and a Jerod Hutchison 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the Gremlins were up 14-7 at halftime.

Kepple threw his second touchdown pass to Glenn Toy for 16 yards and Ellenberger connected with Bowser for a 30-yard touchdown, both in the third quarter.

Conto said he didn't want to slow down after going up 28-7 against the Bulldogs.

“28-7 against Redbank, a throwing team, is not big,” Conto said. “Plus, we're working on developing our two quarterbacks ... they don't get too many reps.”

Bulldogs coach Frank Fabian said he went to more running late, trailing by 21.

“We have a freshman quarterback (Jake Dougherty),” Fabian said. “He was starting to press a little bit. We didn't want to put him in any bad situations.”

Dougherty came back with a touchdown pass to senior Keaton Delp with 36 seconds left in the game. He finished 5-for-17 for 110 yards.
