Bipartisan fair trade legislation introduced

Pennsylvania senators are among four lawmakers introducing bipartisan legislation that aims to strengthen U.S. trade remedy laws.

U.S. Sens. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and John Fetterman, D-Pa., introduced the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act this week, alongside U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Sen. Todd Young, R-Ind.

According to a news release, the legislation is intended to combat unfair trade practices and protect American workers. The proposed bill is meant to improve the effectiveness of the U.S. trade remedy system in responding to repeat offenders and serial cheaters.

Additionally, the bill also responds to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which distributes Chinese government subsidies for products made in other countries.

The legislation updates the previous Leveling the Playing Field Act, which was originally signed into law in 2015 and addresses “evolving threats from unfair competition.“

“If we’re going to make more stuff in America, we need to empower American workers and hold foreign countries accountable for the damage they're causing to Pennsylvania’s industries and workers,” Fetterman said.

Casey said the act would help boost the distribution viability of U.S. and Pennsylvania-made products.

“If we don’t improve our trade enforcement tools, countries like China will continue to threaten our working families’ livelihoods,” Casey said.
