Firefighter shows improvement

Nicole Vickinovac said her husband, volunteer firefighter Greg Vickinovac, is showing signs of improvement after contracting COVID-19.
He has been on a ventilator

A member of the Middlesex Township Volunteer Fire Company continues to suffer from the aftermath of the coronavirus, but his wife said there are signs of improvement.

Greg Vickinovac, 41, of Adams Township was placed on a ventilator Feb. 25 after he contracted COVID-19.

Last weekend, 40 to 45 friends and family from various fire departments stood outside UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless to show their support for Vickinovac, who is a patient there.

Greg's wife, Nicole Vickinovac, said Friday that he is still on a ventilator, but the hospital's staff is seeing improvements.

“Takes time for COVID patients to heal, and it's better to go slower,” she said. “They're hoping that beginning of next week, they'll try to do breathing trials to see how he responds to that.”

According to Nicole Vickinovac, Greg started showing symptoms of COVID-19 a few weeks ago. She said her husband was hospitalized and released twice before his current hospitalization. She said that the improvement was good news.

On April 11, the community will host a spaghetti dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. at Middlesex Township Fire Hall to raise funds for the Vickinovac family.

Anyone interested in helping them can also contact Nicole Vickinovac on Facebook to buy T-shirts for $20 that say “#VickinovacStrong.”

“It's getting better now that we know he's moving forward,” Nicole Vickinovac said. “I know he's in good hands.”
