County updates computer security systems

County commissioners on Wednesday approved updates to the county’s computer firewalls and cybersecurity systems.

Commissioners voted 2-1 in favor of a contract with the state for Albert sensors for cyber threats and Cofense email security services. Federal and state funding covers the cost of both services.

All counties in the state use Albert sensors and Cofense services, said James Venturini, county information technology director.

Albert sensors detect and identify malicious cyber activity, and Cofense detects email attacks such as phishing emails.

Leslie Osche, commissioners’ chairman, voted against the agreement. She said the state used to administer the Albert sensors and Cofense systems separately, and she is not comfortable with them being combined them under the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, which the agreement does.

The commissioners unanimously approved a $16,964 professional services agreement with Computer Design and Integration LLC to consolidate and upgrade the county’s Cisco firewalls.

Venturini said the eight or nine firewalls currently in use are nearly 10 years old. The number of firewalls will be reduced to four or five, he said.
