Native American artist shows her work at BC3

Seneca/Lakota revives art forms

BUTLER TWP — Butler County Community College will host an art exhibit called "Traditional Works" by Leah SkyBird in the Mary Hulton Phillips Gallery in the Science and Technology Building.

The exhibit will open Monday with a reception open to the public from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the gallery.

The exhibit will continue through Dec. 10.

SkyBird, a Seneca/Lakota Native American artist and author, preserves cultural and traditional heritage by reviving historic art forms to create contemporary styles through creative expression. Her historically accurate Native American recreated artifacts, paintings and carvings are in museums, galleries and private collections throughout North America and Europe.

SkyBird is also a noted restorer, working to preserve Byzantine religious icons, Buddhist temple statues and other works from all parts of the world. She is employed by early Native American cultures as a researcher and writer. She is currently pursuing a master's degree and is a licensed nurse and herbalist.

Regular gallery hours are 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays. The gallery also will be open before Succop Theater performances, specifically at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17 and at 1 p.m. Nov. 18 before "Beauty and the Beast," at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 before the Knoch High School Orchestra show; at 6 p.m. Nov. 30 before the Trinity Jazz Orchestra; from 1 to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 during 'Tis the Season by Lee's School of Dance; and at 6 p.m. Dec. 6, 7 and 8 and at 1 p.m. Dec. 9 before the Knoch High School play.
