EDCO needs volunteer help
EVANS CITY — Those who have dedicated a significant portion of their lives operating the EDCO Park and Pool are asking the community for help to keep the pool open.
John Rogers, president of the EDCO Park and Pool Authority board, said Monday that the pool will open this summer. But he cannot promise anything beyond that because of a lack of volunteers.
“If people step up, I feel the pool’s future is bright,” Rogers said.
He said the authority needs volunteers with knowledge in various areas to help with the operation of the park and pool.
He said those with expertise in information technology, finance, grant writing, groundskeeping, law, government or building and maintenance would be welcomed by the board. Those without expertise in a particular field also could help.
Rogers said Scout troops and the Evans City Leo Club have provided significant services over the past two years.
“It’s nice to see the kids’ concern for the park and pool in all the services they have provided,” Rogers said. “Now I’m looking for the adults to step up.”
He said, “I always tell people if they would spend one less hour per week watching TV and spend one more hour doing volunteer work, things would get done.”
Cindy Caldwell, who has been the authority board president and who manages the pool each summer, said creative volunteer opportunities would also be welcomed.
Caldwell suggested that individual families take over the maintenance of one facet of the park. For example, a family could commit to caring for the volleyball court or the basketball court, playground, fencing, flower beds, compost pile, fire ring, or other areas.
“These are all things that would add money to the budget because we wouldn’t have to pay someone to do them,” she said.
Caldwell said Roy Long, 79, is the pool maintenance man. She said he has refurbished much of the pool building’s interior, winterizes the pool building and park each year, and does other tasks meant for a much younger man.
“It’s time for our town’s adults to help out,” Caldwell said. “It takes a community to keep a community pool and park going.” She said help also is needed with fundraisers. That revenue keeps the park and pool running, because there is no reliable income source.
Caldwell said the authority for the past three years has applied for state Department of Community and Economic Development grants through the county, but has not received them.
Rogers said he also wants to hire a management trainee to assist Caldwell and possibly take over the job in the future.
Those interested in volunteering or applying for the position can do so on the website, www.edcopark.com, or by calling Rogers at 724-841-5354.
