The Butler County Prison may soon have more eyes to see what goes on inside.

The county commissioners are set to approve a $294,000 contract Wednesday with Com-Tech Services to add 37 cameras and upgrade software in the prison.

Warden Joe DeMore said in an interview the additional cameras will expand what is captured on video.

“This should give us better coverage in some spots,” he said.

DeMore said the prison already has 390 cameras.

The county prison board approved the purchase last month.

DeMore said the expense would be paid from the inmate commissary fund, which has $750,000. Commissary funds may be used to enhance security.

The commissioners also will be voting on an agreement with Allegheny County to house their inmates when needed.

The daily rate would be $60 for each inmate.

DeMore said at the commissioners meeting this past Wednesday that the two county prisons Allegheny already uses — Washington and Westmoreland — have no extra space.

“They're almost at capacity,” he said.

The agreement also would cover emergency transfers to each other's facility if a major problem arises at either site.
