Byers' late goal lifts SRU men's soccer

Chris Byers, a graduate of Slippery Rock High School, collected a loose ball off a deflected header by Jeff Hamley to score with three seconds left in overtime to give the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bloomsburg Wednesday.

The win was The Rock's (7-5-1, 6-3-1) fourth straight and second overtime victory in as many games and kept the squad in first place in the conference.

Gary Saunders scored off an assist by Nick Christy to give SRU an early 1-0 lead. Bloomsburg outshot The Rock 18-11.

Despite Sarah Mangiarelli's goal, SRU fell to host Mercyhurst 2-1 in a non-conference game Wednesday.The loss snapped SRU's four-game winning streak and five-game unbeaten streak. The Rock (6-3-2) outshot the Lakers 14-7.

Butler County Community College carded a 342 in finishing third out of eight teams in the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championships Wednesday at The Links in Apollo.Nate Bilski had an 83 and Chuck Manos an 84 to finish eighth and 10th, respectively, among individuals. Both were named all-conference.Travis Shingleton carded an 87 and Matt Edgar had an 88 for the Pioneers, who will compete in the PCAA meet Monday and Tuesday at the Penn National Golf Club in Chambersburg.Westmoreland Community College won the WPCC championship with a 320.
