JACKSON TWP — The first win is in the bag.

But as the Seneca Valley football team tries for back-to-back victories, their next opponent presents an even stiffer test.

The Raiders are coming off a hard-fought, 13-12 win at Penn-Trafford and will host Kiski Area (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Kiski Area's two wins include a 31-0 shutout of Butler and a 33-14 win over Canon-McMillan last Friday.

The Cavaliers will bring a trio of offensive stars into this week's contest.

Senior quarterback Josh Vick has passed for 497 yards and five touchdowns in two games within his team's single-back spread offense.

Wide receiver James O'Quinn has seven catches for 255 yards and two scores, and junior running back Bret Gunn has rushed for 150 yards and has scored four touchdowns, not including a score on an interception return last week.

"These kids play hard on Friday nights, and we pushed them very hard in conditioning," Kiski coach Chris Heater said. "Our first two games, it was a very hot night and our guys were able to get through it."

Vick was on pace to have a great junior campaign last year when a knee injury cut his season short.

"His injury devastated the team last year," said Heater. "He is experiencing absolutely no effects from it this season. He does a lot of running for us and he's not running timid or scared."

The Cavaliers' defense remains a question mark as just three starters returned from last year's 4-6 playoff squad.

They include linebacker Zach Murdock, Gunn, a safety, and O'Quinn, a cornerback.

There were several opportunities for the Raiders to lose last week's game, but they withstood second-half adversity, including an injury to junior quarterback C.J. Brown.

"We're way past being happy with just playing well," said Raiders' coach Ron Butschle. "The goal is to win."

Brown took a hard hit late in the second quarter before hitting his head on the turf. He is expected to play this week, as is tailback James Daniels, who was in and out of SV's lineup last week with leg cramps and a sore ankle.

Though pleased with the win, Butschle knows his team must improve in certain areas from last week, including special teams.

The Raiders had a snap sail over the head of punter Ryan Scheller, setting up Penn-Trafford's first touchdown.

The Warriors' second score came on a 92-yard kickoff return to open the second half.

Kiski's kick returners, Gunn and Jeff Jackson, are both threats to do the same this week.

"Guys got out of their lanes and took some bad angles," Butschle said. "Just about everything you can do wrong on a kickoff, we did."

The good news for the Raiders' special teams came in the form of two blocked extra points by Bill Burns and kicker Ryan Zipf, who booted two crucial field goals of 38 and 29 yards.

"He also plays soccer and he only practices with us about once a week," Butschle said of Zipf. "I gauge how he does during pre-game warmups. Usually, we'll send him out there from 45 yards and in."

Seneca Valley defeated Kiski Area last season, 26-14.
