Tornado hockey wins thrilling opener

WARRENDALE — Butler’s No. 1 power play unit was on the bench.

Its No. 2 power play unit was busy putting the puck in the net.

Joseph DiMartino snapped a wrist shot past Seneca Valley goaltender Tanner Pfeffer with 4.7 seconds left Tuesday night, giving the Golden Tornado a come-from behind 4-3 victory in a mutual PIHL season opener at Warrendale Bladerunners.

The Raiders’ Louis Martin went to the penalty box after being whistled for hooking with 16 seconds remaining and the game tied at 3.

“We were playing for overtime,” Butler coach Mike Guentner admitted. “I kept my No. 1 power play unit on the bench to give them some rest before the overtime period started.

“There was no set play at the end there. Everything that happened was pure luck.”

And hard work.

The Golden Tornado won the faceoff in SV territory and the puck was forced to the left boards deep in the zone. Connor Scott and Jonathan Fair assisted on the game-winner, freeing up the puck and getting it to an open DiMartino in the slot.

DiMartino’s tally completed a Butler comeback from a 3-0 first period deficit.

“Butler has a never give up type of attitude and we didn’t finish chances on our power play,” SV coach Anthony Raco said. “When you do that, you not only cost yourself potential goals ... You give the other team momentum.”

The Raiders went 0-for-7 on the power play. Butler was 2-for-5, Troy Double scoring on a wrap-around — assisted by Fair and Nick Whann — for the Tornado’s first goal 5:21 into the second period.

“That one gave us a lift,” Double said. “Play was starting to turn our way and getting on the board made us believe even more that we could do this.”

Butler scored early in the third period as Double gained possession behind the Raider net and fed Jake Campbell right in front. Campbell poked it in just 1:45 into the period.

Double tied the game with 3:36 left in regulation when he slipped the puck behind Pfeffer during a scrum in front of the net.

“We talked going into the third period about scoring a goal early ourselves and taking some steam out of them,” Raco said. “Instead, it was the other way around.”

The Raiders scored on two of their first three shots on Butler netminder Logan Rothbauer. Spencer Schutte knocked home his own rebound just 1:13 into the game. Chris Marziotto scored on a wrist shot while skating down the left wing — taking a pass from Jared Hulburt — just three minutes later.

Parker Faix made it 3-0 with 4:34 left in the opening frame.

Rothbauer stopped all 21 shots thrown at him in the final two periods. SV’s Brendan Macfarlane hit the goalpost during a power play opportunity late in the second period.

Seneca Valley held a 32-28 edge in shots on goal. Butler had 15 shots in the final period.

“We’re well-conditioned and these guys believe in each other and work hard for each other,” Guentner said. “There’s not a tighter locker room in the PIHL than ours.”

Double had two goals and an assist for the Tornado while Whann had three assists. Marziotto had a goal and two assists for the Raiders.

Butler returns to action Monday, hosting State College at 7:10 p.m. at the Ice Connection. Seneca Valley travels to Mt. Lebanon for a 7:10 p.m. game Thursday.
