Unhappy with 2 utilities

Commissioner wants answers

BUTLER TWP — Butler Township officials will contact state regulators regarding two utility companies after Commissioner David Zarnick said he is unhappy with their performance.

Zarnick said at Monday’s township commissioners meeting that he wants answers on why West Penn Power is taking so long to address street lights in need of replacement or repair in the township, and he wants answers about a fee increase by Pennsylvania American Water.

Zarnick said it often takes weeks for the electric company to respond to reports of street light issues in the township. The water company requested an $8,000 increase in an annual fee the township pays for fire hydrant services.

Township Manager Ed Kirkwood said the township pays about $98,000 annually to the water company in hydrant fees. The fee increase was approved earlier this year by the Public Utility Commission.

Zarnick said he wants Kirkwood to contact the PUC regarding both utility companies.
