Mars survives, advances to WPIAL boys volleyball semis
Mars dropped the initial two sets, but still advanced to face Ambridge in the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals by beating Montour, 3-2, Thursday night. The Planets won this match by scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-23, 25-12, and 15-12.
Penn-Trafford 3, Butler 1 — Coleton Welter and Max Gianneski both had 19 kills and Alex Moncello 42 assists, but the Golden Tornado bowed to Penn-Trafford in four sets. The scores of the match were 25-21, 25-20, 25-21, and 25-23.
Butler’s lone set win came in the third, and Adam Kaufman totaled 26 digs in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal defeat.
North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 1 — The Raiders dropped the first two sets of this WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal clash, put up a valiant fight in the third, and ultimately fell short in the fourth against the rival Tigers.
The scores of the match were 25-22, 25-20, 30-28, and 25-21.
North Catholic 3, South Fayette 0 — The Trojans advanced to the WPIAL Class 2A semifinals by sweeping the Lions. The scores of the match were 25-13, 25-21, and 26-24.
Boys Lacrosse
Seneca Valley’s season came to a close with a 17-7 defeat at the hands of Mt. Lebanon in the WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinals.
Softball
Emma Covert pitched all five innings and banged out four hits for Moniteau as it defeated A-C Valley, 14-2, on the road Thursday. Mariska Shunk added two base knocks and pushed across five runs in the win.
The game was the Falcon Knights’ regular-season finale. They’ll play Forest at home on Monday to open the District 9 Class 1A playoffs.
Moniteau improved to 11-9 on the season and has won three of its last four.
