Knoch girls impressive in winning KC Classic
KARNS CITY - Knoch found what it was looking for at the Karns City Classic over the weekend.
Something to build on.
Jen Robinson had 14 points, five rebounds and five steals Saturday to lead the Knights to a 62-40 girls basketball victory over host Karns City in the tournament's championship game.
"We had only played two games coming into this weekend," Knoch coach Curt Vasas said. "Our goal was to work on some things, develop our bench and build some momentum leading into section play.
"I think we accomplished that."
Knoch (3-1) travels to Kittanning to begin section play tonight.
The Knights had three girls score in double figures Saturday after having all five starters do so Friday night. They built a 29-16 lead by halftime and led by as many as 23 (56-33) with 5:10 left in the game.
"They have a very good team," Karns City coach Chris Bellis said. "I'm particularly impressed with their point guard. (Nicole) Reiser controls the pace of the game and scores when she has to.
"Knoch came out here ready to play and I'm not sure if we did. I was a little disappointed in the way we didn't respond to them playing us physically."
Robinson was Knoch's ring leader when it came to physical play. She was an offensive force inside and repeatedly dove on the floor after loose basketballs.
"Jen was all over the place," Vasas said. "That's the way she plays all the time. She's intense on the court and she had a nice tournament."
Reiser added 11 points and Liz Burgard 10 for Knoch. Lauren Koegler had nine points, five steals and four rebounds.
Brianna Markle led Karns City (3-2) with 12 points. Haley Callihan added 11 points and eight rebounds, Morgan Summerville eight points and seven boards.
"If nothing else, this game will help prepare us for Moniteau (Tuesday)," Bellis said. "They are another scrappy team that plays very well defensively.
"Knoch has a lot of varsity experience on is team and most of our girls were playing in only their fifth varsity game. The difference was evident out there."
Knoch had 21 turnovers to Karns City's 19. The Knights had a 34-30 edge in rebounding.
