SRU's Daugherty pole vaults to 2nd at NCAA meet
Slippery Rock University’s Cameron Daugherty broke his own school record and set a new Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference standard in the men’s pole vault with an effort of 5.2 meters (17 feet, 1/4 inch) at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
The height was good for second place behind Texas A&M-Kingsville’s Jordan Yamoah, who reached 5.3 meters.
In the women’s meet, SRU’s Ashley West earned All-America honors by tying for eighth place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.7 meters (5 feet, 7 inches).
Baseball
Shippensburg University, ranked 13th in the nation, scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat visiting SRU 4-3 in a nine-inning affair Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Red Raiders took the weekend series from The Rock after the teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Rock, No. 18 in the country, got on the board first Sunday with Brandon Myers’ solo home run in the top of the second frame. Myers also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Jake Nogalo accounted for SRU’s other tally with a run-scoring infield single in the sixth.
Sophomore reliever Anton Constantino pitched the seventh frame and shouldered the loss for The Rock (8-2).
SRU won the first game of the series, 9-0, highlighted by Lou Trivino’s complete-game victory. He struck out 11, walked none and allowed just three hits.
His offensive support was led by center fielder Jake Weibley, who had two hits, drove in three runs and scored once.
Shippensburg won Saturday’s nightcap 8-0.
