Butler athletes have career days at Baldwin Invite
Grace Nichols and Jocie Slesinski both had career-bests and finished 1-2 in the high jump as the Butler’s boys and girls track and field teams competed at the 49th annual Baldwin Invitational Friday. The Golden Tornado girls finished in fifth place and the boys in 14th, as 71 schools attended the event.
Nichols’ jump was five feet, four inches, while Slesinski went five feet, one inch. Megan Baggetta finished second in the triple jump (38-9). Aubrey Rock had a season-best in the long jump (17-2.25) and earned fourth place in that event.
The girls’ 3,200-meter relay of Madison McGarrah, Makayla McLister, Madalyn Semmler, and Ava Brewster also finished fourth with a season-best 10:11.18 time.
Ava Brewster’s 11:25.75 3,200-meter run was the quickest of her career. As was Evelyn Paserba’s 9-foot, 11-inch pole vault.
On the boys side, Orein McBride-Cager earned third place in the high jump with a career-best of six feet, one inch. Markeis Frazier finished fourth in the shot put, Giovanni Fout sixth in the long jump and triple jump. The 1,600-relay team of Josh Aspelin, Jacob Fallecker, Griffin Bauer, and Jace Gratzmiller finished seventh.
Butler’s boys will compete in the WPIAL team championship on Tuesday at West Mifflin, and the Northern Area Last Chance Meet is at Pine-Richland Thursday.
– Knoch competed in the Pine-Richland Invite Friday, and Madi Hunt (shot put), Karlee Buterbaugh (javelin), Kendall Loos (long jump), and the boys’ 1,600-meter relay earned medals. That team consisted of Keaton Oprosky, Mason Nebel, Eli Ruediger, and Braylon Esplen.
Baseball
Senior Brock Matthews had a double, single, and three RBIs as Moniteau downed St. Mary’s, 8-6, at Erie’s UPMC Park Saturday. Dawson Cook added a double and also pushed three runs across, while freshmen Kameron Hershey and Cadin Helfrich each had a single.
Cook and Connor Ealy both had four strikeouts on the mound.
