Police: Shots fired at party SRU students organized event
MONROEVILLE, Allegheny County — Witnesses are being sought for a rowdy party where shots were fired Saturday outside a restaurant at the Monroeville Mall.
No one was reportedly shot during the early morning incident.
The party took place at Winghart’s Whiskey and Burger Bar and was organized by “individuals” from Slippery Rock University.
Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole believes 500 to 1,000 college-age adults gathered for the party, which eventually spilled into the mall’s parking lot once it was shut down because of the huge turnout. Cole said his officers encountered hundreds of students outside the restaurant.
“There weren’t really any fights per se,” he said. “There was just a lot of pushing and shoving. I think the planners realized pretty quickly there were more people than what they had figured.”
While trying to clear the area about 1 a.m., Cole said shots were fired in the parking lot. No one appears to have been hit, but a 25-year-old man was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries and a 19-year-old woman was taken to UPMC East for an unrelated medical problem.
“All we know at this point is that no one appears to have been shot, but we’re still trying to figure out what happened,” said Cole, noting the person responsible for the shooting has not been identified, though evidence has been recovered.
One person was charged with disorderly conduct and more charges could be coming, Cole said.
Because of the party’s size and reports of shots fired, officers from 20 police departments were summoned.
“It was awfully unusual,” Cole said. “The officers called for assistance because they wanted to have a show of force. I think they just kept on calling for mutual aid, so there were probably 30 officers in total there,”
The party, called an All White Affair in which students dress in all white clothes, was promoted on social media.
SRU spokesman Rita Abent said the event was put together by SRU students.
“This was not a fraternity event, but was a private party organized by a group of students who had a personal contract with the facility to host the event,” she said.
She said that no fraternity money was spent on the event.
“Because this was a private party, we (SRU) have no control over it,” Abent said.
In addition to SRU, students were reportedly bused there from the University of Pittsburgh, Indiana (Pa.) University and California (Pa.) University. Cole said students from other colleges also may have attended.
Cole said his department likes to have as much notice as possible for large gatherings, especially at the mall where a large brawl broke out last year and a shooting took place in February inside Macy’s department store.
“We need to be notified in advance so we can have proper security,” Cole said.
Anyone with information about the incident on Saturday is asked to call the Monroeville police at 412-856-1111.
