BUTLER TWP— Clank, boing and bonk? Plenty. Swish? Not so much.

Butler sank 20 of 58 shots from the floor, nine of 19 from the line and 0 of 15 from the 3-point arc in suffering a 58-49 boys basketball loss to Woodland Hills Tuesday night.

"Play well, shoot well — I know that's the saying, but we created plenty of opportunities for ourselves with our pressure defense tonight,"Golden Tornado coach Joe Lewandowski said.

"We could have won this game despite our shooting. We had a lot of advantages on the break, two-on-one's. ... We just didn't finish. You have to score or at least get fouled in those situations."

Add a number of missed layups to the Tornado's woes on this night.

Woodland Hills (2-1) took a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter, but the game was tied eight times and there were eight lead changes in the first three quarters.

The Wolverines never lost the lead in the fourth. However, a pair of Logan Renwick layups — the latter off a clear path to the basket after a steal at midcourt — pulled Butler (1-2) within 40-38 with 7:29 to play.

A 7-1 run widened that gap to eight, but the Tornado pulled to within 49-45 with 2:08 left as Jeff Tompkins stuck back an offensive rebound and Eric King sank a layup following a turnover.

Woodland Hills had 23 turnovers to Butler's 13.

"Their pressure defense forces you into a lot of mistakes,"Wolverines coach Aaron Tipton said. "We had trouble with it all night."

"This was a winnable game if we convert a few more chances and don't put the wrong guy at the foul line," Lewandowski said.

The "wrong" guy was senior guard Ron Flowers, who sank eight consecutive free throws in the fourth period to keep Butler at bay.

Flowers led all scorers with 27 points and added 12 rebounds. He sank 16 of his first 17 free throws in the contest.

"We were putting him on the line at times when we didn't need to,"Lewandowski said.

Dave Caparosa, a 6-foot-4 junior, contributed 10 points and 14 rebounds to the Woodland Hills cause. The Wolverines enjoyed a 43-28 advantage on the boards.

Bob Swartwout paced the Tornado with 14 points and 12 rebounds while Tompkins added 14 points and five boards.

Renwick had five steals and four rebounds for Butler.

"Team rebounding is something we need to work on,"Lewandowski admitted. "We can't ask Bobby to do all of it. We need to execute better as a team at that phase of the game."

Butler begins section play Friday at North Hills.

"You always want a few more games to get ready for section games, but it's on top of us now and our kids are excited about it,"Lewandowski said. "We have to come out and attack."
