Ramblers will ground Grove City

And then there was one.

But what a one it is.

The last Butler County area high school football team standing is Grove City, which enters the District 10 Class AAA championship game Friday against Erie Cathedral Prep with a spotless 11-0 record.

It’s the first time the Eagles have been 11-0, and the program started in the 1920s.

That’s a long, long time.

Even in 2004, when Grove City advanced to the state championship game, it wasn’t unbeaten at this point of the season.

As good as the Eagles have been, they have their work cut out for them against the Ramblers.

The WPIAL also crowns four champions this week.

At 90-22, I’m trying to get to 100 wins, so, good news: You get to hear my thoughts on those games, too.

• Erie Cathedral Prep 31, Grove City 21 — The Eagles haven’t had much luck against Prep. In two matchups, both in the district playoffs, Grove City has suffered losses of 45-21 and 47-21.This Eagles team, though, has bucked a lot of history.Wes Phipps won the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy. No Grove City player had ever done that, and he might be 10 times better on defense. The Eagles also beat rival Wilmington to end a long drought against the Greyhounds. And, on paper, this doesn’t look like a particularly dangerous Prep team. But that is deceiving. The Ramblers might be 7-4, but the four losses have come against staunch opponents. The seven wins were routs. As much as it pains me to pick against the Eagles, I must. Prep has too much speed, too much talent and it has Grove City’s number.•

WPIAL Class AAA final: Central Valley 21, Montour 20 — This is a matchup of the two teams that ousted two Butler County squads, Mars and Knoch. The winner of this game also plays the winner of the Grove City-Prep game in the first round of the state playoffs next week.Don’t underestimate Central Valley, which has 30 seniors.•

WPIAL Class A final: Rochester 23, Clairton 14 — Doesn’t Rochester win this every year? Why stop now?•

WPIAL Class AA final:

South Fayette 29, Aliquippa 26 — South Fayette pummeled a very good Freeport team and is 13-0.•

WPIAL Class AAAA final: North Allegheny 29, Woodland Hills 16 — Woody High needed a miraculous comeback against Mount Lebanon two weeks ago just to keep its playoff run alive. NA has been dominant all season.Scoop was also penalized for landing with his full weight on the Oakland quarterback Sunday.
