Giant duck will float through Harmony parade

Students at Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School last year made a huge paper duck as part of an art project. The duck will be on display Saturday during a parade in Harmony at 10 a.m. In front is Aydan Clark, and in back, from left, are Vanessa Herold, Blake Swaboda, Emma Bedell, Adelie Gifford, Nathan Craig and Regan Cale.

ZELIENOPLE — More than 30 students at Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School this weekend will show off a gigantic yellow duck that students made last year as an art project.

They will do that in a parade in Harmony.

The parade is part of the Rise Above the Waters celebration, an event to reflect on the flooding in 2004 that struck Harmony. The flood from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan damaged and destroyed dozens of houses and businesses.

The parade, which will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, will help to commemorate the 10 years since the flood and the progress the community has made in that time.

DeeAnn Graham, the principal at the elementary school, said each student had a hand in making the duck.

She said a parent created the frame of the duck with chicken wire. Each student got the chance to place a yellow piece of duct tape on the wire, creating the exterior of the duck.

Graham, who said the duck is about five feet long and four feet tall, said it has traveled to other events in the area. She said the parade is just one more chance for students to show off their work to the community.

“We’re going to have about 30 kids walking next to the duck, which is awesome,” she said.

The parade also will include fire trucks, marching bands and antique cars, among others.
