CENTER TWP — State police are investigating a weekend crash that seriously injured a township man riding a motorcycle.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was taken by medical helicopter to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital with a head injury, following the wreck about 4:50 p.m. Saturday in southern Center Township.

Authorities said the man was traveling on Cornell Drive when a woman driving a sport utility vehicle pulled out from Oberlin Drive and into his path.

The front of the cycle slammed into the SUV's driver's side front fender area. He was not wearing a helmet.

Emergency crews were called and found the man lying in the middle of the road. He was “in and out” of consciousness, said Chief Nathan Wulff of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department.

The man had injuries described as “serious to critical.” He was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. He was subsequently flown by STAT MedEvac helicopter to the hospital in Pittsburgh.

Authorities said both drivers live in Center Township, not far from the crash that happened near the Westwood Manor III housing plan, west of North Duffy Road.

A police accident reconstruction investigation was conducted, and the report is pending. The investigating trooper did not return a telephone call Sunday.

Police and firefighters remained at the scene for about four hours.
