Mt. Lebanon erupts for 11-1 hockey win over Butler

KITTANNING - Once Mt. Lebanon decided to share the wealth, it discovered plenty of wealth to share.

The unbeaten Blue Devils were limited to one goal and four shots on net in the first period of their varsity hockey game against Butler Wednesday night at Belmont Arena.

Mt. Lebanon erupted for six goals in the first eight minutes of the second period and cruised to an 11-1 victory over the Golden Tornado.

"We were playing way too selfishly in the first period," Mt. Lebanon coach Paul Taibi said. "Everybody was trying to do the job by himself.

"Between periods, I let my feelings be known to them."

The Blue Devils produced 23 shots on goal in the second period. Butler coach Leo Cancilla pulled starting goaltender Kim Antonetti after she allowed seven goals on 21 shots.

"I won't let one goalie give up all the goals in a game like this," Cancilla said. "I've pulled our starting goalie three times already this year.

"We came out flat in the second period. We didn't skate as well. You let up against a team like Mt. Lebanon and this is what happens.

"I'm sure they underestimated us in the first period. Opposing teams are gonna look at what we've done and won't quite be ready for us," Cancilla added.

Butler (0-4) has been outscored 41-11 so far this season. The Tornado have dropped decisions of 9-2 to North Allegheny, 12-2 to Bethel Park and 9-6 to Fox Chapel.

"Our first six games are tough and we knew that going in," Cancilla said. "I still believe we'll be in the playoffs. Our veteran players won't allow these guys to lose confidence."

Spencer Crouse scored Butler's lone goal Wednesday, deflecting in John Pakutz's shot from center point on a power play at 12:56 of the middle period, when the Golden Tornado trailed 7-0. Mike Guentner also drew an assist on the goal.

Crouse has four goals on the year. Greg Rogerson has three. No other Butler player has scored more than once.

But this night belonged to the Blue Devils. Chad Uddstrom scored a hat trick for Mt. Lebanon - scoring all three in the second period - and Tony Valerio had four assists.

Valerio leads the team with 14 goals and 28 points in just five games.

"Chad is in his third year with the varsity and we're counting on him to be one of our key players," Taibi said. "He had been injured and only had one goal coming into tonight."

The Blue Devils outshot Butler 40-11 and scored three power play goals in four chances.

"Their power play is incredible," Cancilla said. "They pass and move the puck so well. If you take penalties against them, they're going to score."

James Cichra added two goals for Mt. Lebanon and Tyler Murovich scored his 10th goal of the year.

The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 45-5.

"We came within a goal of winning the state title (losing to Malvern Prep) last year," Taibi said. "We lost eight seniors from that team, but we have three new players in the program and some quality kids have moved up from junior varsity.

"We feel like we can make a run at the championship this year."

Butler plays at Penn-Trafford Friday night.

"We'll get things straightened out," Cancilla said. "Our schedule lightens up in December."
