Weather gets in way of Butler Senior Day
Rain and hail interrupted Butler’s non-section matchup with Penn-Trafford twice before the game was called in the bottom third Monday evening at Michelle Krill Memorial Field at Historic Pullman Park.
The Golden Tornado trailed, 3-1, when the two sides agreed to call it quits. Fortunately, Butler was able to get through with its Senior Day festivities prior to the contest.
“I felt like, in that game, we were going to be able to come back,” Golden Tornado coach Josh Forbes said. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole, but it was going to be a good challenge for us to work ourselves back into the game and see if we could win a baseball game.
“That would’ve been fun to watch, but unfortunately we weren’t able to do it. We would’ve chipped away in that third inning and the game would’ve been 3-2 with Mac (Schnur) back out on the mound ... Mother Nature had different plans today.”
Alex Collins started on the hill for Butler (5-5), throwing two innings to battery-mate Conner McTighe. Madden Clement was the team’s designated hitter and had one of his team’s two hits on the day — a single to left field in the first inning.
In the top half of the initial frame, the Warriors (7-3) notched four two-out singles, which sandwiched a walk by Peyton Bigler. The batter after that free pass — Ian Temple — whacked a bases-loaded single that scored Dylan Grabowksi and Brody Hoffman.
“I liked the way we hit the ball,” Penn-Trafford coach Lou Cortazzo said. “For a team that was struggling at the plate, I felt pretty good about them swinging the bat today.
“We’ve been working on a two-strike approach for the last week now, and bats are coming through and being aggressive.”
Shortstop Lance Slater opened the home third with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. McTighe hit a triple that pushed him across, then Tom Kalkstein was swapped out for Maddox Cenci on the bump. The teams retreated to the dugouts for good as he loosened his arm.
Junior left-fielder Liam McElroy was the only non-senior in the starting lineup. Schnur manned center field before pitching in relief in the top of the third. Ian Shay played second base, Colin Casteel third base, Brayden Povlick right field, and James Desmond first base.
“I wish we could’ve gotten a chance to get a complete ballgame in and play all of them,” Forbes said. “Maybe down the road, if we can pick up another game at the end of the year, I can do another game where I play all 10 of them.”
