LOCK HAVEN — Clarion University football coach Jay Foster, formerly the longtime defensive coordinator at Slippery Rock University, was named PSAC West Coach of the Year.
Foster, 49, led the Golden Eagles to an 8-3 record this season, the program's best since 1996.
Clarion won its final six games of the campaign, its longest winning streak since 1992.
Seneca Valley will serve as host of a WPIAL Class AA football playoff game Friday while Karns City will host a PIAA soccer tripleheader Saturday.On Friday, Beaver Falls (9-1) and Sto-Rox (8-2) will play a 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal game at NexTier Stadium.On Saturday, Seton-LaSalle (15-8) will play Mercyhurst Prep (16-2-3) in a Class A boys quarterfinal game at 11 a.m.At 1 p.m., Erie Cathedral Prep (17-2) will square off against Upper St. Clair (19-3-1) in a Class AAA boys contest, followed by Peters Township (19-2-2) and Erie McDowell (19-3) at 3 p.m. in Class AAA girls action.
SEATTLE — Ken Griffey Jr. and the Mariners agreed to another one-year contract that will keep the popular slugger in Seattle next year.Griffey, baseball's active home run leader with 630, turns 40 Nov. 21. He gets the same incentive-laden deal with $2 million in base salary he signed to return to Seattle for the 2009 season.It is believed Griffey will get a slightly higher base salary, with fewer incentives based upon plate appearances and Mariners home attendance. He is likely to again be a part-time designated hitter in his 22nd season since he came up with the Mariners as a teenager.
NEW YORK — Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins won his third consecutive NL Gold Glove and teammate Shane Victorino won for the second straight time in the outfield.St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina and San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez also were second-time winners.Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright succeeded Greg Maddux, who won his record 18th last year.Dodgers second baseman Orlando Hudson won for the fourth time, taking over from Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips.Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman replaced the Mets' David Wright, a boyhood friend. PARIS — Marat Safin ended his career Wednesday after losing to Juan Martin del Potro 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the second round of the Paris Masters.The 29-year-old Safin, a two-time Grand Slam title winner, put on a solid performance on center court but couldn't overcome the U.S. Open champion.Safin, a three-time winner in Paris, captured the 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open among his 15 singles titles. He has said he will quit playing after this season.The charismatic Russian hasn't won a tournament since that victory in Australia. His best result this year was reaching the semifinals in St. Petersburg, Russia, last month.
