Flames destroy garage

Firefighters from Herman, Lick Hill, South Butler and Oakland Township respond to a garage fire on Vogleyville Road in Summit Township on Wednesday. The garage was destroyed. No injuries were reported.

SUMMIT TWP — A fire Wednesday afternoon destroyed a detached garage near Herman Road.

The wood and stone garage was at 12 Vogleyville Road. The fire started about 2 p.m.

Ryan Wilcox, who lives on the property and is in the process of buying it, was working on a lawn mower in the garage earlier in the day. He said it was too cold to work outside, so he went inside.

Later, Wilcox’s wife saw that the garage was on fire. Wilcox saw the fire and called 911.

“By the time we arrived, it was fully involved,” said Rob McLafferty, chief of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company.

McLafferty said it took firefighters only a few minutes to knock the fire down. He said at the scene that it was too early to determine a cause, but he said it is not suspicious.

Wilcox, who used to be a firefighter in Scott Township, Lawrence County, said the garage had two commercial lawn mowers for a lawn mowing business he hopes to start, two quads, his children’s bikes, and other items.

He said the building is insured, but he is not sure about the contents.
