Community day to raise rebuilding funds

Ken Clowes of Butler carries lumber for a construction project at Father Marinaro Skate Park Wednesday.

The public is invited to meet their neighbors, make friends, have some fun and support a vital city park on Saturday.

The Father Marinaro Skate Competition and Community Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Father Marinaro Park, which is between Ziegler Avenue and Kaufman Drive in Butler.

Cindy Parker of the Southside Park Group said all funds raised at the event will benefit the reconstruction of deteriorating features at the skate park there.

She said the event will have hot dogs, burgers, hot sausage, walking tacos and other fare for sale, and the Fishers of Men Christian group will serve free lunches and offer live Christian music.

A skateboarding competition with prizes for the winners will be held as well, Parker said.Ten arts and crafts vendors and a free bounce house for young children will round out the event, which will be held rain or shine.Registration for the competition begins at 10 a.m., Parker said.“We hope to get a lot of people out there to support the park,” Parker said. “More than anything, we want that park to be a place for families to come and do fun things. That's our goal, just community.”

She said two popular, yet decaying, skateboard features in the park — the hubba ramp and the vertical wall — are being repaired as a result of donations from Butler Downtown and the Butler Fall Festival as well as others.Parker said the $5,000 in recent donations has allowed construction to begin on those features. All are invited to attend the free event Saturday.

Dan Wilbert measures a feature at the Father Marinaro Skate Park Wednesday evening. Community volunteers came out to rebuild and paint some of the park structures.
