Mr. Smith goes to Lernerville ... and wins
BUFFALO TWP — Danny Smith was just looking to turn some laps.
He turned plenty — then turned into victory lane following Friday night’s Sprint feature at Lernerville Speedway.
Smith rarely races in this region — his only previous Lernerville win coming in an all-star race June 5, 2007 — as he hails from Chillicothe, Ohio, four and a half hours away.
“With the Outlaws racing at Eldora tonight, all of the Ohio tracks that run Sprint cars were off,” Smith said. “My motor’s not ready to run with those guys, so I came here to get a few laps in.”
Smith owns more than 300 career feature wins in a 38-year career. He started from the 10th spot and overtook defending points champion Danny Holtgraver on the 13th lap.
He survived a daring move by Butler’s Brian Ellenberger on the final lap to claim the checkered flag.
Ellenberger came from the seventh starting spot and moved into second on a 23rd-lap restart. He tried diving under Smith coming off Turn 2 of the final lap.
“Those other guys were running my line and I had to try something,” Ellenberger said. “I saw some ruts along the middle and figured if I could catch one of them, I could hold the car in there.
“Instead, I jumped right over it.”
Ellenberger’s move gave him a split-second lead, but his No. 22 car drifted to the top of the track and he had to settle for third.
“I saw him come down there, but didn’t think he’d be able to hold it,” Smith said. “That was a heckuva move, though.”
Smith suffered a broken vertebrae in an accident last June, required surgery and missed the rest of the season. He has won three straight races, taking checkered flags at Attica and Chillicothe last weekend.
“My back’s holding up pretty well. I feel like I’m back in form,” Smith said. “We don’t run for points or with a series anywhere. We just try to win some money and have some fun.”
Holtgraver started fourth, competing in his first race since suffering a concussion two weeks ago in a racing accident in Fremont, Ohio.
“The car was good tonight. I just got out-drove,” Holtgraver said. “It’s not like the guy (Smith) started up front. He came from behind to win it.
“I’ll take this, though. I’m happy with where we’re at.”
Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills and Jeremiah Shingledecker led from wire-to-wire to win the Late Model and Modified features, respectively.
Satterlee maintained the lead through four restarts and claimed his 12th career Lernerville victory. He didn’t hit lapped traffic until the final lap.
“I had clean air in front of me and those restarts came at perfect times,” Satterlee said. “Sometimes restarts couldn’t come at any worse of a time.
“Every conceivable break went my way tonight. You have to take opportunities of situations like this.”
Jared Miley finished second and Dave Hess Jr. claimed third.
“All three of us have been good pretty most every track we go to, and it was that way again tonight,” Miley said. “If this was open racing the whole way, it might have been interesting.”
The Modified feature had no restarts and Shingledecker easily outdistanced runner-up Brian Swartzlander to get the checkered flag.
Heat races were interrupted by a 45-minute rain delay Friday.
“It’s always hard to win a race here,” Shingledecker said. “After the rain, I thought the track would be pretty bad, but that track was perfect.”
Rob Shook won the Sportsman Stock feature — his first Lernerville win since 2005 — and came from the 15th starting position to do it.
Chicora’s Mike Miller was in line to win his second feature in as many tries this year, coming from the 12th spot to take the lead on the 13th lap. One lap away from victory, a caution flag forced a restart and Miller’s No. 81 car broke while under caution.
Notes: There were 74 cars in the pits. ... Defending Sportsman Stock points champion Joe Kelley scratched before Friday’s feature with motor problems. ... Swartzlander and Miller have two heat race wins in as many tries this season.
