Herr, Robenolt key Rock win
SLIPPERY ROCK — Robert Herr and Alex Robenolt collected three hits each Tuesday as the Slippery Rock University baseball team defeated Ashland (Ohio), 9-4, at Critchfield Park.
The game featured a matchup of two of NCAA Division II’s winningest coaches in SRU’s Jeff Messer (1,085 wins) and Ashland’s John Schaly (1,257).
The Rock (13-10) banged out 12 hits. Herr had a triple, two RBI and two runs scored while Robenolt had a pair of doubles and scored two runs.
Evan Knaus homered and joined Jon Kozarian and Koby Bubash in collecting two RBI each for The Rock. Jake Norris (3-0) was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Nate Malak.
The Rock returns to PSAC West play Friday, playing California (Pa.) in a doubleheader at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa. The two teams have a twinbill at Critchfield Park on Saturday. Both doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m.
Softball
SRU swept a twinbill from Gannon, 10-8 and 1-0, on Tuesday to improve to 16-14 overall, 7-5 in PSAC West play.
Kelsi Anderson and Alexsa Hurd tied SRU’s single-game strikeout records, both fanning 15 in their respective victories. Anna Villies had four hits and two runs scored in the twinbilll while Julia Montie tallied five hits, a home run and three RBI.
Slippery Rock High School graduate Julianna Hutchinson slugged her first career home run, had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs in the first game.
SRU hosts Seton Hill in a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
