Penn Theater hosts variety of events

A new season of events is planned for the Penn Theater downtown Butler.

The film "Under the Tuscan Sun," based on Frances Mayes novel of the same title, will be shown at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17 to co-inside with Butler's Fall Ethnic Festival.

The Blazing Star Choral Society will perform Mozart's "Requiem" at 8 p.m. Sept. 18.

On Oct. 14, an original, interactive murder mystery will be produced in conjunction with the BC3 Pioneer Players theater club.

A Haunted Theater Concert will be presented the evening of Oct. 22. Audience members who arrive in costume will be treated to a discount. Haunted theater events will be scheduled for the remainder of October.

The Penn will once again be party central for Ring in the Arts, the downtown New Year's Eve celebration to close out 2005 and welcome 2006. Attendees can stop in at the Penn to get party hats. Children's cartoons will be shown in the Bantam theater upstairs, and rock groups will be featured in the Lydia theater downstairs.

In the new year, community organizations are planning spring film events at the Penn.

The Butler Branch of the American Association of University Women and Slippery Rock University are organizing a film festival for March 4 to mark Women's History Month.

On April 7, 8 and 9, the St. Paul Church Choir will sponsor Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."

And local artist Tom Panei will host a show and sale from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. May 21.

The Butler Penn Theater Community Trust is a member of the Butler Arts Council and the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

Those purchasing pre-sale tickets for special events at the theater will be able to use their tickets for 10 percent discounts at selected local restaurants.
