Alex Moncello had 43 assists and Coleton Welter 18 kills to spark Butler to a 3-1 boys volleyball victory over North Hills on Thursday.

Butler answered a loss in the opening game by downing the Indians by scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23.

Adam Kaufman contributed 24 digs and Andrew Archer five blocks for the Golden Tornado (4-1, 2-0), who will compete in the Peters Township Tournament this weekend.

Boys Tennis

Two Butler County players advanced to the WPIAL tournament, to be held later this month, thanks to their efforts in section play.

In Class 3A, Mars’ Josh Dunham defeated Butler’s Andrew Bocci before falling to North Allegheny’s Shaun Fernando in a semifinal clash. Dunham then dropped the consolation match to NA’s Manas Kathir, but the fourth-place finish is good enough to move him to the WPIAL bracket.

Class 2A action saw North Catholic’s Alex Garvey reach the section final with wins over Hampton’s Ben LaRusse and Sam Norris of Highlands.

Aquinas Academy’s Jackson Gillespie defeated Garvey for the section title and the latter will enter the district tournament as runner-up.
