Saxonburg carnival moves to July
SAXONBURG — Two events in the borough are returning to the way they were in the past.
The annual Saxonburg Fireman’s Carnival, which for years has been the first major festival of the summer in Butler County, will be later in the summer next year.
Council President Carol Neubert, who is the carnival chairman, said in an interview that rainy weather in June and residents’ requests are the reasons to push back the carnival.
Neubert said the 2015 carnival will be the third full week of July.
The carnival includes amusement rides, a pet parade and a parade for fire and emergency vehicles.
Another event that will return is trick or treat night for Halloween. Borough council on Wednesday reinstated trick or treat.
Mayor Pam Bauman proposed the change, saying it is time to bring back the traditional holiday activity.
Council members agreed.
“I think it’s a great idea to bring it back to Saxonburg,” said council Vice President Pat Rinebolt.
Council voted for trick or treat to run from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
Bauman said the two hours will enable children to participate in a costume parade and stop at the Saxonburg fire hall for other activities with enough time remaining to visit residences and businesses.
The mayor said she understood why the borough ended that celebration years ago due to a scare over what items were being given to children, but that time is long past.
“We’ve come a long way,” she said.
The year when trick or treat was eliminated was unavailable.
