Aldi shoppers can pay using creditNEW YORK — Aldi, the Germany-based no-frills supermarket chain, says it will now accept credit cards as it tries to attract more shoppers.Aldi had previously just accepted cash and debit cards.The move, announced Tuesday, should put more pressure on chains like Target, Wal-Mart and others. The announcement comes a little more than a month after the chain said it was adding healthier choices at checkout.Aldi, which operates nearly 1,500 stores in the U.S., is expanding quickly and plans to have nearly 2,000 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2018.Aldi will now accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Central Electric has grant for teachersPARKER — Central Electric Cooperative has announced its 2016 Bright Ideas Teacher Grant Program for schools in Butler, Armstrong, Clarion, Forest and Venango counties.Teachers are eligible for a maximum $1,000 grant to fund “innovative, energy-related learning projects,” the company said.Applications for the grants will be accepted through Aug. 31. Automakers post sales gains in Feb.DETROIT — Automakers posted big U.S. sales gains last month as consumers — giddy from Super Bowl ads — returned to showrooms after a snowy January.Sales rose 7 percent over last February to 1.3 million vehicles, according to Autodata Corp. Automakers reported February sales on Tuesday.Industry analysts had expected February sales to bounce back after a slight decline in January.

Study: Extra cancer drugs being wastedTRENTON, N.J. — High prices for cancer medicines aren’t the only reason they cost insurers and patients so much.Waste pads the bill, a study finds, because infused cancer drugs are distributed in the U.S. in vials that usually contain more medicine than most patients need. The excess often is thrown out, even though it’s perfectly good — and worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York estimate that wasted cancer medicine in the U.S. this year will add up to nearly $3 billion in excess costs.

AT&T will launch new video servicesDALLAS — AT&T will launch new video services later this year that will allow customers to stream and watch video the way they’d like, whether on a TV, laptop or smart phone.The video streaming options will let viewers skip some of the hassles of traditional TV, such as set-top boxes, annual contracts and satellite dishes. And it will include a free option with content that targets millennials.AT&T said Tuesday that it will offer the three new video streaming options in the fourth quarter.AT&T became the world’s largest pay TV provider in July when it acquired DirecTV for $67 billion.
