Resurfacing to be done at night

EVANS CITY — While a Route 68 resurfacing project will begin next week on the west side of town, officials from the state Department of Transportation say motorists will notice little impact.

“Milling and paving will occur at night, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., to reduce impacts to the traveling public,” said PennDOT spokesman Deborah Casadei.

The $2.3-million project will be the resurfacing of 1.79 miles of Route 68 from Washington Street to Ridge Road, which means the project will extend into Jackson Township.

Norm Nelson, the borough’s director of public works, said work is scheduled to begin on Monday night with milling.

Shields Asphalt Paving of Bakerstown, Allegheny County, won the PennDOT bid for the stretch of Route 68, which is the borough’s Main Street.

Shields also has the bid to repave the approaches to the railroad tracks, Nelson said.

He said one side of Main Street will be done at a time.

He said a public works employee will be on site when necessary to raise the borough’s man holes and water boxes as the asphalt is laid on Main Street.

Casadei said the crosswalks also will be painted.

She said the work should be done by October.

Route 68 is a main route for motorists traveling to and from Butler and points east to Route 79, Cranberry Township and northern Allegheny County.
