Pens make move to win Cup this year

The Pittsburgh Penguins believe they can win the Stanley Cup.

They tipped their hand by acquiring winger Gary Roberts from the Florida Panthers before the NHL trading deadline.

Obviously, the Penguins are a young team. Roberts will turn 41 in May. He has 424 career NHL goals.

He scored 53 goals in a season for the Calgary Flames — 15 years ago. He had 13 goals in 50 games for the Panthers this year.

The biggest positive about Roberts is he carries a reputation of being a strong playoff performer.

The Penguins had no reason for acquiring him, other than as a key piece toward making a run at the Cup. If they bow out of the playoffs early, getting Roberts will have been a waste of time.

By the way, Roberts waived a no-trade clause in his contract to come to Pittsburgh.

Apparently, he believes the Penguins can win the Stanley Cup as well.
