Girls night out
BUTLER TWP — The Seneca Valley boys swimming and diving team missed its meet against Butler Thursday.
Fortunately, the Seneca Valley girls team and the Golden Tornado's Molly Evans didn't.
The Raiders girls won seven of the first nine events en route to a 100-81 victory to wrap up the dual meet season for both teams.
Evans accounted for the Tornado's two wins in the stretch, setting a school and pool record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 55.97 seconds and a pool record in the 500 freestyle (5:07.59).
In the boys meet, Butler swam unopposed.
Seneca Valley athletic director Greg Caprara and Raiders assistant coach Tom Fletcher would not comment on the boys team's absence, nor on the absence of head coach Tom Donati.
The Raiders' Rose Snyder captured both the 50 freestyle (25.46) and 100 freestyle (55.70) events, as well as anchoring the winning 200 medley relay (1:53.97), which opened the meet.
Kelly Connolly was a member of that relay, as well as the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:45.99) and the 200 individual medley (2:14.53).
"I was impressed with the times and the effort," said Raiders assistant coach Tom Fletcher. "It's been tough because we haven't been at practice since Monday. If you're not in the water after a three-day layoff, it shows."
Fletcher also was pleased with the performance of Elyse Dobrick, who won the 100 butterfly (59.52), was second in the 50 freestyle behind Snyder and also on the 200 medley relay team.
"Elyse had a standout meet," said Fletcher. "In the 50 free, I didn't know she had speed (25.64), but she proved me wrong."
Butler coach Jeff Armstrong was thrilled with the performances of Evans and Sarah Clouse, who was second in the 50 freestyle behind Snyder and was credited with the win at 100 breaststroke.
'Sarah Clouse was sick, but swam like a trooper," said Armstrong. "She hung around her times."
For the SV boys, Jason Clouse placed first in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, while Hans Bergh won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle for Butler.
"They had to do what they had to do," said Armstrong. "They swam their last dual meet and tried to make the (WPIAL)cut. They'll go to the last-ditch meet Saturday (at North Allegheny) to get some competition."
The Raiders improved to 9-3-1 overall and finished tied with North Allegheny for second place with one loss and one tie behind undefeated Fox Chapel. The Butler girls fell to 3-8.
