Dale E. “Carl” Hughes, 77, of Butler passed away at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday at Butler Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 11, 1935, in Penn Township to the late John Eugene Hughes and Pearl (Stokes) Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was a member of the Nixon United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee. He worked as a rigger for ARMCO, retiring in 1997 after 40 years retiring on the same day he started.

He was a member of the Victory Lodge 694 F&AM, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle. Mr. Hughes was a founding member of the Moraine Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and a founding member of Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troop 53. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Hughes loved traveling, gardening, square and ballroom dancing and walking the rails to trails.

Mr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Barbara (Brandon) Hughes, who he married on July 31, 1956; one son, Roger Hughes and his wife, Cheryl, of Butler; two daughters, Wanda Adams and her husband, Robert, of Wake Forest, N.C., and Janice Critchlow and her husband, Robert, of Broomfield, Colo.; five grandchildren, Tiffany Adams, Stephanie Jackson and her husband, Russell, Bradley Hughes, Steven Adams and Amanda Hughes Kiser and her husband, Eric; two sisters, Blanche Mitchell and her husband, James, of Genesee, Pa., and Olive Grace Wygant of Franklin, Pa., and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Donald J. Hughes, and one sister, Betty Sheakley.

HUGHES — Friends of Dale E. “Carl” Hughes, who passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2013, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Nixon United Methodist Church, 334 Airport Road, Butler, with the Rev. Bruce K. Merrit of the Nixon United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Brownsdale Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nixon United Methodist Church, 334 Airport Road, Butler, PA 16001 or to the donor's favorite charity.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
