Bank robber to serve 4 years

A Butler Township man will spend four years in state prison for robbing the Citizens Bank in downtown Butler this year.

According to court records, 33-year-old Cyrus Smith confessed after being arrested two days later in a hotel room full of evidence of his drug use.

According to court records, the incident occurred April 7 after Smith went to his job for a few hours, then punched out.

He walked into the bank about 10 a.m. and handed a teller a note with instructions to empty a cash drawer, and not to set off any alarms.

The robber indicated he had a gun, but the teller never saw one.

A security camera captured several photographs of the robber, which investigators posted on Facebook. People in the community, including Smith’s mother, recognized him.

Acting on a tip, police found Smith at the Super 8 motel in Butler Township. He was in a room littered with empty bags of suspected heroin, syringes, a crack cocaine pipe and other contraband as well as hundreds of dollars, according to court records.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of robbery, and he was sentenced Thursday by Butler County Judge Timothy McCune.

Smith was sentenced to serve 2 to 4 years in prison, but the judge decided he is not eligible for parole. This means Smith must serve the full four years.

Smith also was ordered to repay the bank for the stolen money: $3,095. Smith’s defense attorney Charles Nedz said he may dispute that total later.
