Driver nets Pure Stock hat trick
BUFFALO TWP — Since he started running low, Greg Beach has been riding high.
The Chicora driver of the No. 33XPure Stock won his third consecutive Lernerville Speedway feature Friday night, zipping past race-leaders Wayne Carbo of Saxonburg and Butch Lambert of Mars on the final turn of the final lap.
Pole-sitter Carbo had led the entire race until Beach used the low groove to get past the two cars running the high groove in front of him.
Beach hadn't won a Lernerville feature since May 2005 until he won July 7 at the Sarver track. He hasn't lost one since.
Despite starting from the 12th spot the past two weeks, he's managed to rediscover victory lane.
"I'm dumbfounded by this, really," Beach said. "It's hard enough to win one race in this division, let alone two. To take three in a row, it's just hard to believe."
Beach becomes the first Pure Stock driver since Scott Bochek in 2000 to win three consecutive features at Lernerville. He is the first driver to do so in any division since Ed Lynch Jr. won the first three Sprint features of the 2004 season.
Carbo appeared to have the race won with a lap to go, but a car well behind the leaders spun out in Turn 4, forcing a restart and a two-lap dash to the checkered flag.
Beach used the extra lap to pull off his finishing move as Carbo and Lambert had their cars scrape together while battling to beat Beach to the finish line.
"When you're starting 12th, you need some help out there,"Beach said. "Things have to break your way."
Because he's won three weeks in a row, Beach will begin next week's Pure Stock feature dead last.
"You need a good start. You still race hard,"he said. "It's not going to change my approach to anything."
The victory was Beach's 10th at Lernerville.
In other feature races Friday night, Tom Winkle of Mars (Modifieds), Sam Stile of Charleroi (Late Models) and Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning (Sprints) all claimed their second wins of the year at the Sarver track.
Winkle started on the pole and kept the lead until Keith Swartzlander passed him on a 14th-lap restart. Winkle got the lead back on another restart two laps later.
"I made a bad decision the first time and chose the high groove,"Winkle said. "He (Swartzlander) was better on the low side and he got me.
"Fortunately, I was able to take it back."
Swartzlander, in only his second year driving a Modified, wound up fading to fourth but still posted his best finish of the year.
Modified points leader Kevin Bolland had to tag the field after taking a hit while getting spun on Turn 2 of the 14th lap. He wound up taking second, edging Brian Swartzlander on the race's final turn.
"I had to try something there to win the race,"Swartzlander said. "My plan was to go up high and try to slide in front of Tom.
"When I looked down, Kevin was in that spot, so that took care of that."
Neither Swartzlander nor Winkle were surprised Bolland worked his way back to the front.
"There weren't that many cars on the track (19) and there were 11 laps to go,"Swartzlander said. "I knew he'd be back."
Like Winkle, Stile had the pole for his feature. He led the Late Model race for all but one lap, allowing Gary Lyle a brief advantage on lap 7.
Stile's win was his sixth feature triumph overall on dirt tracks this season, but there was plenty of jockeying for positions behind him. Alex Ferree of Saxonburg started 20th and wound up fourth, Mike Blose started ninth and took second while Zelienople's John Flinner started 12th and finished fifth.
Carl Bowser of Sarver led the first 17 laps of the Sprint feature in bidding for his first career victory. Schaeffer spoiled that bid when he jumped in front of him on the back straightaway of Lap 18.
Their cars came together and Bowser nearly spun out. He kept control of the No. 10 and wound up settling for third behind Rod George. Schaeffer, who started from the seventh spot, wound up winning comfortably.
"First off, I want to apologize to Carl Bowser,"Schaeffer said in victory lane. "I got a little too close to him there. I probably should have waited a couple of laps before making that move.
"But watching Ed Lynch finish second Tuesday in an Outlaws race here, then for me to beat him tonight is pretty special for me."
Notes: There were 91 cars in the pits, including 28 Late Models. ... Red lights came out during three of the four features. The No. 25 Sprint car of Freeport's Mike Shearer went over the edge of Turn 2, the No. 27JLate Model of Evans City's Jeff Jones got caught up in the fence at the end of the front straightaway and Don McClure of Sarver flipped his Pure Stock near the flag-stand. None of the drivers was injured. ... Jarod Hawkins, 19, of Fairmont, W.Va., made his first appearance at Lernerville and won his Late Model heat race.
