Blood brothers
BUFFALOTWP — Kevin Bolland has put together a memorable season in his No. 777 Modified car.
The New Brighton resident recently clinched points championships at Lernerville Speedway, Tri-City Speedway in Franklin and the Big Block Modified Challenge Series.
He's also produced 10 feature victories on the campaign. But there's one memory of 2006 Bolland would like to see reversed.
"I want wins, I want points championships ... and I want my mother back,"he said.
Rosalie Bolland, 64, was diagnosed with leukemia in November of 2005. She recently underwent a stem cell transplant and remains a patient at UPMCShadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh.
In that same hospital, on the same floor, is Sandy Winkle, mother of Modified driver Tom Winkle of Mars. Mrs. Winkle was diagnosed with leukemia a month ago.
Mrs. Bolland and Winkle occupy rooms 738 and 740, respectively.
Winkle has won two Lernerville features this season and finished fourth in points. Racing on a limited budget, he doesn't race at other tracks.
Like Bolland, his full attention has not been on racing this season.
"You hear the word leukemia and it's scary,"Winkle said. "Our mothers being on the same floor, and the mayor (Pittsburgh mayor Bob O'Connor) is there, too. It's strange.
"When our mothers have felt well enough, they've talked to each other,"Winkle said. "But they haven't had much contact."
Lernerville Speedway is trying to give both women plenty of contact — intravenously.
Working with the Central Blood Bank, Lernerville has set up a blood drive from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday in a donor bus on the track's grounds. The blood drive takes place prior to the Larry Peters Memorial MACSLate Model race and Sonia Bullis Memorial Race at the speedway.
The blood drive was first announced over the public address system at Lernerville during the Aug. 18 Fab Four show — and 15 fans promptly signed up.
"I'm sure some of the people don't even know Kevin's mom or mine,"Winkle said. "But race fans always support the drivers and the race teams.
"We don't claim to be NASCAR. This is about local people helping each other in a small world."
Lernerville Speedway manager Gary Risch Jr., a Modified driver himself, didn't hesitate in lending his support to the track hosting the blood drive.
"Kevin and Tom are part of us. They're part of our family,"Risch said. "Racing is a family sport and this is a family place.
"We want to do anything we can to help out as much as we can."
Between working and racing, Bolland manages to visit his mother in the hospital virtually every day. Every one of the 10 trophies from his feature wins has found its way on to the window sill in her hospital room.
"While I'm in there and I see those bags of blood being pumped into her, I wonder ... Where does all that blood come from?,"he said. "And what happens if the supply ever stops?
"No one ever thinks of that until they have a loved one in need of it. We want to make sure the supply never stops."
Bolland said his mother isn't fully aware of his racing success this year.
"I showed her my last trophy and she looked at me and said, 'Are you still racing? Isn't that over yet?,'" he said.
Anyone wishing to take part in the blood drive may call Cristin Finley at 412-209-7072. Anyone donating blood will receive a free drink and sandwich coupon, courtesy of Lernerville Speedway.
Anyone 17 or older, weighing at least 110 pounds and in generally good health, is eligible to donate blood. A driver's license, state ID, passport or donor card is required.
Central Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products for 42 major hospitals in the Pittsburgh area, including Butler Memorial and the Butler VAMedical Center.
