Everly

Susan Hatstuko Everly, 83, of Tionesta died Sunday at her home in Tionesta after a long and happy life.

She was an inspiration to her family and will be profoundly missed by all.

Sue was born April 12, 1926, in Hilo, Hawaii, daughter of the late Kizun and Haruko Tamashiro.

She spent her early childhood years with her maternal grandparents in Sukuta, Okinawa, Japan, before returning to Hawaii. She remained in Hawaii with her parents and five brothers until her marriage to Seaman 1st Class Clyde Everly in 1947, at which time she traveled to live with her new family in Butler.

Susan and Clyde moved to Tionesta in 1965 and divorced in 1972.

Throughout her life in Tionesta, Sue owned, operated and managed several local businesses. During the late 1960s and through the mid-1970s, she owned and operated The Hut, currently known as Bananas. Over the years she owned several rental properties including the building which currently houses the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the former Beehive apartment building. She is most notably remembered in her role as proprietor of The Knotty Pine Restaurant, which she acquired in the late 1970s and continued to operate until her youngest daughter, JoAnn Lewis, took over in the 1990s.

Sue's favorite pastime was spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed shopping, antiquing, drives through the countryside, knitting, crocheting, listening to music, watching old movies and cooking. She was proud of her Japanese heritage and enjoyed sharing her ancestor's customs and recipes with her children and grandchildren.

Throughout the years, Sue belonged to many organizations. More recently, she was a member of the Tionesta Presbyterian Church, the Tionesta Senior Citizens and the Crickets.

Sue is survived by two daughters, Gina Everly-Johnson of Tionesta and JoAnn Lewis and her husband, Randy, of Pleasantville; eight granddaughters, Heather Tilley and her husband, J.T., of Branson, Mo., Alyce Busch and her husband, Randy, of Tionesta, Rhiannon Fray of Tionesta, Meloni Shaffer and her husband, Mike, of Pleasantville, Lacey Everly of Denver, Randa Lewis of Lake Placid, N.Y., Anna Paige Everly of Denver and Heidi Lewis of Pleasantville; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Owens of Branson, Mo., Kyliegh Tietz of Denver and Ezra Busch of Tionesta; a brother, Tokio Tamashiro and his wife, Norma, of Las Vegas; four sisters-in-law, Fumi Tamashiro, Ueko Tamashiro and Emiko Tamashiro, all of California, and Jean (Everly) Cochran of Butler; a brother-in-law, Donald Everly and his wife, Phyllis, of Butler; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by a son, Clyde "Cud" Everly of Denver and four brothers, Shigeru "Curly" Tamashiro of California, Tadao Tamashiro of California, Osamu "Jack" Tamashiro and his wife, Sachi "Elsie," of California and Yoshio "Al" Tamashiro of California.
