In response to ‘Corner of Walk and Don’t Walk’

We agree with Scott C. Kerr’s letter to the editor Feb. 19. Some of the displays on the electronic billboard at the intersection of Route 8 and Airport Road are too bright and can be distracting.

However, electronic billboards are permitted under the Penn Township zoning ordinance. A conditional use hearing was conducted for this electronic billboard. The use was granted in accordance with ordinance requirements. We trust that the messages displayed will have appropriate content and brightness levels that minimize distractions.

We disagree with Mr. Kerr’s observation that pedestrians do not cross this intersection. Several residents walk, run and bike across Route 8 from East Airport and Airport roads daily. Colonial Gardens veteran residents also walk across this intersection on their way to and from the Dollar General store just north of this intersection.

We agree with Mr. Kerr’s observation that too many vehicles approach the Route 8 signal at a high rate of speed rather than slowing down in anticipation of the red light. Be assured, Penn Township police officers are enforcing traffic laws.

Penn Township intends to incorporate all safety measures with the new traffic light.

We are thankful that Butler Eagle articles are getting the message out to the community. Speeding is the leading cause of accidents. We must change drivers’ mindsets to obey traffic laws.

Samuel M. Ward, chairman

Penn Township Board of Supervisors
