Residents opposed to GetGo ignored

The article published Feb. 21 titled “Proposed GetGo raises concerns,” in Franklin Township, reminded me of another township meeting two years ago, when an unpopular ordinance was being voted on.

In attendance were around 250 concerned farmers, business owners, longtime homeowners (some multi-generational) and transplants, who had chosen to move here from Pittsburgh and other cities because they loved the freedoms and benefits of this unique township, which consists of a small, sparsely populated community.

Several passionate cases were made opposing clauses that would grant overreaching authority to the township managers. “We the people” spoke in unity that night, but hundreds of residents were met with defiance, with the three supervisors refusing to answer questions, followed by voting in favor of the ordinance.

On Feb. 20, a standing-room-only crowd again voiced their opposition to a huge development plan that would impact the entire area in a negative way. Only a small handful would support it, one saying “it would be good for the community.” Obviously, the “community” — represented that night by overwhelming majority — do not want it.

Any form of government — whether local, state or federal — seems to forget they are elected and entrusted to uphold and represent the will of the people, not the other way around. Maybe they need to be reminded that this is not optional.
