Prison health provider ending contract early

Company in midst of 2nd 5-year deal

A Pittsburgh health care provider that serves inmates in the county prison is terminating its contract with the county, effective Sept. 30.

Wexford Health Sources of Pittsburgh, which is in the midst of its second five-year contract with the county, met with county officials earlier this week and agreed to part ways, said Wil White, county solicitor.

The company wanted to exercise a clause in the contract that allowed it to terminate the agreement by giving 60 days notice, but agreed to remain on the job until the end of September, he said.

“It's probably for the best for both parties,” White said.

The county has been generally happy with the services the company has provided, but there have been issues, and its desire to terminate the contract was not a tremendous surprise, he said.

The company had one or one and a half years left on the contract.

“We had a feeling they weren't going to renew,” White said.

The county prison board will accept the termination at its meeting Tuesday and appoint a successor in August, he said. The county will advertise for a new provider, he added.

Leslie Osche, chairwoman of the county commissioners, said the company is struggling to meet the terms of the contract.

The company could not be reached for comment Friday.
