Corner of Walk and Don’t Walk

I have been driving on Route 8 for 50 some years, and know the intersection with Airport Road very well. New signals may help the stated issues, but let’s look beyond the proposal.

Distractions cause so many accidents today. I commented several years back that the then new digital electronic billboard at that intersection was a big distraction. It is literally right at that site. I’m not sure who approved it, but I would remove it at once.

Pedestrian crosswalks? In 50 years, I have never seen a pedestrian anywhere near that intersection. Where would they be coming from, and where would they be going? There are only three corners that might host development, but nothing planned. No residential developments, either. Waste of time, energy and funds at this point. Might as well put a crosswalk on the Turnpike. I for one would never chance a walk across Route 8, even with a crosswalk.

Since we emerged from the COVID protocols, the rules of the road have flown out the window. Not every driver obeys the No Turn On Red signs at that intersection. The 50 mph speed limit on Route 8, please, try 60 or 70 or higher. I would task our local and state law enforcement to once again enforce existing speed limits and general traffic laws.

Unplugging that billboard and enforcing the speed limit can happen right now. The new signs won’t arrive until spring 2024. Why wait?
