Butler gridders get awards
Numerous Butler High School football players received team awards recently during the program's annual postseason banquet.
Senior center Nate Hartung won the McDowell Award as team MVP. The award goes to the player who represents leadership, commitment and scholarship.
Hartung also received the Haug Award, presented to the outstanding interior lineman.
Running back Bob Alexander received the Helmet Award, which goes to the player who has accumulated the most helmet stickers. Stickers are given by coaches for categories such as hits, sacks, tackles and scoring.
Alexander accumulated 1,282 yards of total offense this past season.
Tight end Josh Wachter received an award for enthusiasm and the Butler Cubs Award being a low-profile outstanding player. He caught 21 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns.
Linebacker Frank Kowalkowski was named most improved in the weight room and joined Luke Renwick in receiving an academic award. Renwick received the Rivers Award for being an outstanding student.
Quarterback Nick Monteleone received the Snack and Pack Award for outstanding offensive player. He threw for 1,172 yards and six touchdowns.
Tom Gaul received the Beer Barn Award for outstanding defensive player. He had 43 tackles, including six for loss and two quarterback sacks.
Other award winners were Dan Tatangelo (Wheeler), Bob Ridley (Bollinger), Charlie Rodgers (Friedman), Matt Saeler (Trimbur), Bryan Hunter (dedication) and Dan Hixon (unsung hero).
Butler's 2005 team captains - by team vote - were announced as well. They are Phil Scialabba, Noah Hartung and Andy Goettler.
Butler Football Booster Club officers for 2005 include presidents Kevin and Joni Vogel, vice-presidents Bill and Sue Tatangelo, vice presidents of game day sales Gary and Nancy McElhinney, secretary Denise Kerr, treasurers Carol Achezinski and Cheryl Davis, co-secretary Donna Kowalkowski and co-treasurer Cathy Werner.
Lynne Hasychak received the 2004 Butler Football Booster Extra Effort Award.
