'92 Blazer tops 500,000 miles
The Butler Eagle went looking for owners of high mileage vehicles. Here is the story of one of them. Other owners talk about their well-driven vehicles in the Spring Car Care Section inside today’s edition.RENFREW — Bob Bell has stuck with his truck for a long time.Bell has logged more than a half-million miles on its odometer — 517,482, to be exact. And the trip’s not over yet, not for either of them.At 86 years old, he is no longer able to drive his 1992 Chevrolet Blazer. But, Bell, formerly of North Washington, still ensures that his “Old Faithful” gets a chance to spin its wheels once a week via his nephew, Bill.Bell said he keeps the vehicle for “sentimental value.”There is no trick or secret to Bell’s exceptionally long-lasting vehicle.“Just good maintenance,” he said. This includes changing the oil every 3,500 to 4,000 miles and replacing the brakes, the latter of which Bell did himself. The Blazer has never been in an accident, and has its original engine. It has had only one transmission replacement, and only one ball joint replacement.“For as long as I had it and as many miles as I put on it, I put very little expense in it,” Bell said. “I couldn’t give you a dollar figure, but it was very low.”He kept the inside clean on a regular basis, and made sure to have good brakes, something that is not easy to do in hilly Western Pennsylvania.“You have to be or you pay,” he said. “I think my first brakes on the rear had some 70,000 miles on them before I had to replace them.”Bell has passed on the upkeep to his nephew, while he lives in Renfrew with his caretaker and friend, Mary Ziegler.“I’d love to find somebody that would buy that car and drive it, just to see how long it would run,” he said. “It will run probably close to 4,000 miles now until it’s down a quart of oil, and that’s pretty amazing for that many miles.”Bell sat in his home, pointing to a newspaper article done on Blazers.“I call it ‘Old Faithful’ and that comes from that picture there,” he said. “Because it really has been good to me.”
