Two days, two titles
PITTSBURGH — Much was in store for Mars High swimmer Maggie Gruber Friday, letdown not included.
For the second straight day, the sophomore swam a record-breaking time in winning a WPIAL Class AA girls title at Pitt's Trees Pool, this time in the 100-yard backstroke.
Her effort of 56 seconds toppled the old standard of 56.06 set by Greensburg Central Catholic's Andrea Marko in 2009.
On Thursday, Gruber won the 100 butterfly with a record time of 54.63.
Her sophomore season is far from over — the state meet is later this month — but Gruber now has a pair of WPIAL titles, two district records and a state title she earned last year to her credit.
“There's no looking back on what I've accomplished already,” she said. “It's all about working as hard as you can toward your goal.”
In Friday's backstroke, Gruber bested West Allegheny's Ashley Niznik, who finished in 58.5.
Gruber closed the WPIAL meet with teammates Jocelyn Lemay, Amanda Alikhani and Caroline Pacey in the 400 freestyle relay Friday afternoon.
The squad placed fifth with a time of 3:48.42.
For the Planets boys, junior Jack Muehlheuser qualified for states with a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
Freshman Chris Georgiadis capped a strong individual effort by following up Thursday's fourth-place showing in the 200 individual medley with fifth place in Friday's 500 freestyle.
“He was definitely focused for this meet,” Mars coach Heidi Brandon said of Georgiadis. “He brought his ‘A' game. Last year in the 500 free, 4:59 was good enough to get to the state meet. So Chris' time (4:52.9) should get him there.”
• Shady Side Academy senior and Penn Township resident Anne Marie Bilott placed second in the 100 breaststroke and helped the Indians claim the 400 freestyle relay title.
Another Indians swimmer, Oakland Township resident Hillary Cummings, earned a medal by finishing eighth in the breaststroke.
• Knoch senior Kristy Daubner was eighth in the 100 freestyle.
“I didn't swim as well as I would have liked in the 50 freestyle (Thursday),” Daubner said. “In the 100, my old school record was 55.63 and I swam a 55.15. That makes up for it a bit.”
Class AAA
Seneca Valley's Makena Lynch is headed to the state meet after placing third in the girls 100 freestyle (52.82).
Seneca Valley coach Jerry Koller was very impressed with Lynch's effort.
“It was a gutsy swim,” he said. “She left everything in the pool.”
For SV's boys, Justin Pritchard was sixth in the breaststroke and he teamed with Tony Geyer, Nick Wargo and Matt Myers to place eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.
