Clay Twp. home destroyed
CLAY TWP — A fire erupted in a mobile home on Mizener Lane Tuesday afternoon.
The blaze, which began about 1:20 p.m., destroyed the structure and the contents.
The West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department was the lead department while volunteer firefighters from Center, Marion and Slippery Rock townships and Harrisville assisted.
Matt Wilson, a lieutenant with West Sunbury, said more than 20 firefighters were able to control the fire in about 20 minutes, but too much damage had been done by that point.
“It was a total loss,” he said.
Wilson estimated at least $30,000 in damage to the structure and $10,000 in losses from the contents.
The Red Cross was notified to assist the home's tenant, Bonnie English.
Gary McDougall, the owner of the home and a neighbor to the residence, said English had lived there since 2011.
“It really hurts when it's a total loss,” McDougall said.
Wilson said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
English was not home when the fire started.
“She was still at work,” McDougall said, adding that English works for him at the Camelot Restaurant on Main Street in Slippery Rock.
McDougall, who has owned the home for five years, said it appeared as though the fire began near the living room. That side of the structure received the most damage from the flames.
A garage near that side of the home was not damaged.
McDougall said he had insurance on the house and the garage, but that English did not have renters' insurance.
Fire crews were there for more than two hours after the fire started.
