Winter in Bloom Phipps puts on annual show
PITTSBURGH — Phipps’ Winter Flower Show and Winter Light Garden captures the magic of glass and light through Jan. 12.
The annual display at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens sparkles with new illuminated glass installations, scores of LED lights and thousands of festive flowers.
Featuring the whimsical work of artists Matthew McCormack and Jenn Figg, Winter Flower Show 2013 showcases a variety of glass mushrooms, ferns, bromeliads and tillandsia illuminated from within throughout the conservatory’s west wing.
As always, poinsettias, amaryllis, aromatic paperwhites and other favorites are incorporated into many of the garden scenes.
The outdoor Winter Light Garden returns with glowing orbs, luminous trees and a fountain of light.
The Garden Railroad will be on display, too, taking spectators on an adventure through Phipps Prehistoric Park.
Other festivities this season include: Santa visits on Saturday and Sunday; candlelight evenings through Jan. 12; Brunch in Bloom on Sunday plus Jan. 5; family fun days from Dec. 26 to 30; and a New Year’s Eve family celebration on Dec. 31.
Daily hours for the flower show are 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and for the light garden are 5 to 11 p.m.
Phipps will close at 5 p.m. Dec. 24 and reopen at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 26.
Admission is $15 for adults, $14 for senior citizens and students, and $11 for children ages 2 to 18.
