FOX CHAPEL — In theory, every offensive drive gave Seneca Valley a fresh start.

But whether it was self-inflicted or imposed by Central Catholic's defense, the Raiders' attack never reached its goal.

Three turnovers and seven three-and-outs led to a 35-0 loss for the SV football team in a WPIAL Quad A first-round playoff Friday night.

The Raiders totaled 112 offensive yards Friday night, as the Vikings' defense dominated the line of scrimmage.

"I think it was a little of both," said Raiders coach Don Holl when asked if his offensive line was simply outplayed physically or if blocking assignments were missed. "Central has some very good players and good team speed. They're well-coached and you have to credit them for making plays."

SV quarterback Donny Holl was sacked four times, all in the second half, though he was his team's top ground gainer with 51 yards on 18 carries.

"We're not that big on the defensive line, but we try to get our guys into the gaps," said Central coach Terry Totten. "That's usually our game plan.

"They caught us a few times on quarterback draws, but, for the most part, we did a good job," he added.

The Vikings (8-2) were without the WPIAL's sixth-leading rusher in Damian Jones-Moore, who was out with a knee injury.

But Central received enough big plays from senior David Myers and sophomore Arnell Farmer, who combined for 165 yards on 27 carries and four touchdowns, to make up for his absence.

The Raiders (5-5) gift-wrapped Central's first score.

SV was unable to pick up a first down on its first drive of the game and on the punt, the snap was short, rolling back to Pete Vicente, who was immediately smothered by Central's Shane Yuhas and Malik Johnson.

The Vikings took over at the Raiders 15. On fourth-and-1 from the 6, Central lined up with a full-house backfield, and Farmer's burst around right end, followed by Matt MacZura's extra point, put the Vikings up 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

Dom Maggio scored on a 4-yard run later in the quarter for a 14-0 edge.

The Raiders' best drive of the night began with 12 seconds left in the opening period.

Starting from its own 18, SV stayed exclusively on the ground for the first 12 plays, with Holl, Jack Graham, Randy Morris, Troy Witt and Mike Martin all contributing positive runs down to Central's 10.

From there, Holl threw two straight incomplete passes. On third down, he looked for wideout Jordan Glaser on a crossing pattern, but Yuhas picked the pass off at the goal line and returned it 42 yards.

Six plays later, Central quarterback Perry Hills connected with Anthony Nixon on a 14-yard touchdown pass and the Vikings' lead was stretched to 21-0 at the break.

SV's defense forced two turnovers in the game, with David Mellon intercepting Hills in the first half and Luke Mueller recovering a Hills fumble in the second half.

"We put our defense on a short field tonight," said coach Holl. "But we have tough kids and I'm proud of them."

Farmer added two more scoring runs in the final quarter from 1 and 25 yards out.

Despite the loss, SV's 2009 season was a success, with the team making the WPIAL playoffs for just the third time in 10 years, 2002 and 2007 being the others.

"We told the kids that (making the playoffs) is the minimum," said coach Holl. "We don't want there to be talk about sometimes making the playoffs, we want to be talking about how far we're going to go."
