Sister Mary Zita Green, O.S.F.
Sister Mary Zita Green O.S.F. died Tuesday at Mount Alvernia, Millvale.
Born Paschal Teresa Green on Dec. 2, 1926, in Carbon Center, she was the daughter of Sylvester J. Green and Barbara M. Lehnerd.
She entered the congregation Sept. 7, 1944, from St. Wendelin Parish.
Surviving are a sister, Mary (Paul) Miller, and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Peter, Valentine, Guy, Gerard, Chad, Leonard, Barbara Green and Vera Geibel.
Sister Zita was a teacher, principal and librarian for more than 40 years in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and San Juan, Puerto Rico. She was the assistant superintendent of schools in San Juan and the executive director of government programs in the Pittsburgh Diocesan Catholic Schools office. She also ministered as director of religious education in several parishes in the Pittsburgh Diocese.
After a sabbatical at St. Meinrad's, she stayed on and served as a librarian in the periodical/research department at the Archabbey. In the past several years, she was active in prayer ministry of the congregation.
Sister Zita will be remembered for her willingness to serve in whatever way she could.
<B>GREEN</B> — Visitation for Sister Mary Zita Green O.S.F., who died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, will be at the Mount Alvernia Motherhouse Chapel, 146 Hawthorne Road, Millvale, today from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday from noon to 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 4:45 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the sisters' cemetery at Mount Alvernia.A wake service will be at 6:15 p.m. today. Vespers will be at 5 p.m. Friday.Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Ministry, Formation or Retirement Fund, 146 Hawthorne Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15209.
